Woodland Hills contains two distinct topographies: the flats found north of Ventura Blvd. and east of Woodlake Ave., and the hills found at the southern and western parts of Woodland Hills as they begin their ascent into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Adjoining the Santa Monica mountains are the Chalk Hills, which is a small north-south running range located between De Soto and Winnetka Avenues, from south of Ventura Blvd. to near Victory Blvd. at Pierce College (Architectural Resources Group, Inc. 2013).

Figure 2. Chalk Hill got its name from the ‘mountain’ of white chalk-like marine shale around Pierce College (U.S. Department of the Interior, n.d.).

The average elevation in the San Fernando Valley is 1,627 ft (496 m); the maximum elevation is 9,836 ft (2998 m) (Tessanet, n.d.).
